The City of Miami yesterday adopted a new zoning code based on New Urbanist principles. The code, known as Miami 21, was in the works for several years, championed by outgoing Mayor Manny Diaz, and drafted by world-famous planning firm DPZ. Miami is the first major US city to adopt such a code for the entire city. Miami 21 was approved by the city commission by a vote of 4 to 1, over the objections of the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects, which expressed concerns about limits on creativity.
