New World Symphony Building Events

The New World Symphony recently released details of the opening ceremonies for their new Gehry-designed concert hall and campus building.  Some events are open to the public in part or whole, others require membership in the Friends of the New World Symphony:

JANUARY 18-21, Open Rehearsals, 7:00-8:30 PM: Friends members are invited to open rehearsals on January 18, 19, 20 or 21 at 7:00 pm, free of charge.  Programs and guest artists for these one-hour rehearsals will not be determined in advance, but each will include music and artists from the opening week performances.  Please call our Box Office to reserve your seat at 305-673-3331.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 25, Grand Opening Ceremony, 7:00 PM: After the ceremony will be the public inauguration of the magnificent exterior projection wall, and the premiere of an extraordinary new video mural by artists Tal Rosner and C.E.B. Reas.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 26, Opening Concert, 7:30 PM: An iconic new performance hall comes alive, as Michel Tilson Thomas and the New World Symphony perform Wagner’s dramatic Flying Dutchman Overture and Copland’s majestic Third Symphony. Also featuring the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by renowned British composer Thomas Adès and exciting video art by Tal Rosner.  $100 per ticket, based on availability.  To purchase tickets, contact the box office ASAP at 305-673-3331.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 27, A Schubert Journey, 7:00PM: MTT demonstrates the unprecedented versatility of our new hall with this three-part journey into the music and lyric genius of Franz Schubert.  $100 per ticket, based on availability.  To purchase tickets, contact the box office ASAP at 305-673-3331.

Performance will also be “wallcast” onto the building’s 7,000-square-foot projection wall, featuring a high-quality audio system designed to envelop outdoor audiences in the sound of the orchestra. Experience classical music like never before—from a beautiful public park.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 28, Opening Concert: Reprise, 7:30 PM: We reprise the program of January 26 and wallcast it live onto the exterior projection wall.  $100 per ticket, based on availability.  To purchase tickets, contact the box office ASAP at 305-673-3331.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 30, Pictures at an Exhibition, 5:00PM and 7:00PM: A community open house! During two free performances for the entire family, we invite the public to share in a collaboration between the New World Symphony and the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, where 13 student and faculty filmmakers have created short films to be shown as MTT and the orchestra perform Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.  This is a lottery system.  To enter the contest, please go to www.classicalsouthflorida.org starting Jan. 3 at noon.
