The wait is over for DB2! Late last December, we announced our call for portfolios attracting over 100 design teams from across the globe, which was painfully narrowed down to a selection of just 15 teams! The ante was definitely raised this time around as the projects were extremely well done, making it more difficult for the jury to find the right selection. After days of deliberating, DawnTown is pleased to announce its winning entry for Design/Build 2. The Chicago based team, Design w/ Company, led by Stewart Hicks & Allison Newmeyer will be tasked with activating the Cultural Plaza courtyard with their temporary installation entitled, Pavilion MMM (Miami Many-a-chair Monument).
The team describes their pavilion’s title as having a double meaning: it is both too small to be a full-scale monument as well as being made of many multi-colored ready-made chairs. The chairs here tell a story about Miami and the experience of the people that make up our multicultural city. The designers explain this in a series of visual metaphors of a chair being found, it is then brought home where it is loved and becomes part of the furniture we grow up with, and eventually resold or given away to restart the process over again. Each chair will be turned into a swing and supported by a modular system of construction scaffolding. This clever use of structural support allows for quick assembly and easy enough to disassemble. The chairs will come from Miami’s own neighborhoods to be purchased at yard sales. Its interactivity and play of scale make for an interesting addition to the otherwise underused plaza.
We will be updating our site with all the entries from this year’s teams, as well as on our facebook page. However, there are two other projects we’d like to mention at this time. Even though our competition brief makes no reference to honorable mentions or merits, there were two projects that came very close in this year’s selection process. The jury felt that the work was strong enough to receive distinction. The teams of After-Architecture consisting of Katie MacDonald and Kyle Schumman, and WE-DESIGNS led by Wendy W Fok and Kadri Kerge will receive special merit (Honorable Mention) for their proposals. You can view their work below:
Pavilion MMM will be setup at HistoryMiami in early June the possibility of traveling to different sites in and around the city. The grand opening celebration will be announced through DawnTown’s and HistoryMiami’s respective websites and social media outlets. The DawnTown Design Build Competition is made possible by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, HisotryMiami, and the Miami Downtown Development Authority
